An Overview of UK Government Grants for Startups & Small Business

The StartUp Loans scheme by UK government was originally aimed at young entrepreneurs, but now, there’s no age restrictions. Any entrepreneur with an awesome business idea can apply for loans of up to £25,000 which needs to be repaid over terms of up to five years, with interest payable at 6% a year.

The Startup Loan Scheme is not just about money lending, but successful applicants get free business advice along, which is crucial, especially for first time entrepreneurs.

Enterprise Allowance scheme is another great scheme to mention. This one is aimed at people currently receiving Jobseekers' Allowance, or lone parents on income support. If your idea qualifies, you’re entitled to an allowance payable over 26 weeks and worth up to £1,274. The scheme includes business mentoring as well.

There are many other government and non-government grants and loans on local level as well as industry specific, i.e. science, research, technology etc. Here you can find a big list of small business and startup grants and loans for UK.

To qualify, your business must have been trading for less than two years.

Do Not Forget to Look into Startup Financials before Investing Your Money

Startups are at very threshold of their business and may not have too much financial details available. But, as an investor, you must look into the financial canvas of the startup in question. Because this is where you can have clear idea about what the team is up to and what’s their next projection.

So, before you actually invest in a startup, you must know that….

Investigating the financials may be a bit tricky in case of early stage startups; calculating projections to 5 years is almost impossible but the founding team should be able to at least showcase the roadmap of how they want to build the story towards becoming a profitable company.

An overview of cash flow can tell an overall picture of what’s happening with the available funds right now. Moreover, check the marketing plan and see how they are allocating resources to achieve what targets!

It is very interesting at this point to review the burn rate of the company and if what they are doing with their money actually makes sense.

You may also want to read how important it is to where the startup will be spending your money!
